Mario’s time machine: Learning history the fun way.

Remember when we had to take boring history lessons in school? most of the time the class was super boring because the teacher just did not how to make it fun and engaging, Nintendo wanted to change that a little bit and profit more from the popularity of it’s most famous game character bringing him into the educational game genre for PCs, Mario’s time machine was released in 1993 for MS-DOS and the Super Nintendo entertainment system; Later in 1994 an NES version was released, this is the one that I got to play recently and ended up loving it!

Mario lighting up the olympic torch in ancient Greece

The game is fairly simple and easy you have to rescue Yoshi from Bowser, for that you have to go into different rooms of the Bowser’s museum, kick around some koopa troopas to collect different historical artifacts and take them to their respective place and time using the time machine in the middle of the room so important historical events can happen, some of the artifacts that you can collect and take through time are: The olympic torch to signal the beginning of the olympic games in ancient greece, Cleopatra’s throne so she can keep ruling Egipt, a sledge hammer to bring down the Berlin Wall and a US flag to be placed in the moon after the landing. After you return each item to it’s time you get to see a newspaper talking about the events.

The newspaper after you take the olympic torch back to ancient Greece

After all the items have been returned and all the rooms of the museum are closed, you need to take a test on what you learned throughout the game so you can fight bowser, the fight is what you would expect from a Mario game from the 90’s just jump over him and don’t let him get you, after you defeat bowser you rescue Yoshi and the game ends. If you are a history buff or you want to find a fun way to teach your children about important historical events I recommend this game to you.
